Plains

The Plains card, collector number 231, was released as part of the Magic 2013 core set in July 2012. Core sets in this era were designed to serve as an accessible entry point for new players while providing a reliable rotation of essential cards for the game's mechanics. Plains cards represent the fundamental white mana source, a staple of the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem since its inception, providing the magical energy necessary to cast spells associated with order, protection, and collective strength.

This specific iteration features artwork by Noah Bradley, who aimed to evoke a sense of vast, tranquil openness characteristic of white-aligned landscapes. Bradley’s painterly style for the M13 basic lands was widely appreciated by the player base for its atmospheric depth and the way it departed from the more static, utilitarian depictions of lands in earlier sets. By focusing on expansive horizons and soft, golden lighting, the design successfully elevated the humble basic land into a piece of evocative environmental storytelling.
