Where it came from
The Plains card, collector number 232, was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a basic land, it was designed to provide the white mana essential for gameplay, featuring art that reflects the specific aesthetic of the Bant shard within the set's fragmented multiverse. The expansion explored a world divided into five distinct planes, each defined by a specific color identity, with the art direction emphasizing the pristine, orderly nature of the Bant landscape.
The illustration was created by artist Noah Bradley, whose work contributed to the distinctive visual identity of the Shards of Alara block. The design focuses on the serene, architectural beauty characteristic of the Bant region, utilizing a bright and structured color palette to evoke a sense of stability and peace. It was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, serving as a functional yet aesthetically coherent piece of the broader narrative world-building that defined the set's release.
