Where it came from
The Plains card, collector number 290, was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced players to a plane inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore, shifting the aesthetic focus of the game toward Shinto-influenced landscapes and spirits. Wizards of the Coast commissioned artists to interpret these themes through a lens that blended traditional Eastern art styles with the game's established fantasy aesthetic.
This specific land card features artwork by Hiroki Kawai, who contributed several pieces to the set. The design emphasizes the quiet, expansive nature of a plains environment while adhering to the muted, atmospheric color palette characteristic of the Kamigawa block. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its distinct artistic direction, which helped ground the new setting in a cohesive and immersive visual identity that departed from the more Western-leaning fantasy depictions of earlier sets.
