Plains

The Plains card, specifically identified as collector number mj364 from the 1997 Pro Tour Collector Set, was released by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product. These sets were designed to allow players and collectors to own exact replicas of the decks used by top-placing professional players during the 1996 Pro Tour season. By packaging these cards with gold-bordered backs and distinct backings, the company preserved the historical record of competitive play while ensuring the cards remained distinct from standard tournament-legal playing pieces.

The design of this Plains card mirrors the classic aesthetic of the Magic: The Gathering base sets of the mid-1990s, featuring iconic landscape art that defined the game's early visual language. The set was intended as an educational and souvenir piece, giving the community a rare glimpse into the strategies employed by the game's first professional champions. While the gold-bordered cards were not permitted in sanctioned tournament play, they were well-received by the collecting community as high-quality artifacts that celebrated the inaugural era of the Pro Tour.
