The Plains card, numbered 144 in the 2009 Planechase release, was created as a fundamental land component for the set's preconstructed decks. Planechase introduced a unique multiplayer format where players traverse different planes of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, and these basic lands provided the necessary resource foundation for the gameplay experience. The design shift for this release focused on thematic immersion, aiming to anchor players within the diverse environments of the game’s lore.

Illustrator Richard Wright was commissioned to bring a sense of scale and atmosphere to this Plains artwork. Eschewing the traditional depictions of flat, open fields, Wright’s aesthetic choice leans into the grand, sweeping vistas characteristic of the plane-hopping themes of the set. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its painterly, expansive style, which helped elevate the visual standard for basic lands included in supplemental expansion sets.
