Where it came from
The Collectors' Edition Plains, identified as card number 288, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. This set was created as a non-tournament-legal reproduction of the original Limited Edition Alpha and Beta cards, intended to provide collectors with access to rare and iconic artwork that had become difficult to acquire on the secondary market. The cards are easily distinguished from their tournament-legal counterparts by their gold-bordered backs and square corners.
The artwork featured on this card is part of the original cycle of basic lands commissioned for the launch of Magic: The Gathering. These illustrations were designed to establish the visual language of the game's five colors, with the Plains depicting a tranquil, open landscape intended to represent the concept of white mana. The set was received as a curated archive of the game's early aesthetic, serving as an important historical record for players and collectors interested in the initial creative vision of the franchise.
