Plains

This Plains card from the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar represents a landmark shift in the aesthetic of basic land illustrations. Designed as part of a cycle where artists were tasked with capturing the 'adventure world' theme of the set, this piece features the iconic, sweeping landscapes and oversized floating hedrons that define the plane of Zendikar. It was illustrated by Vincent Proce, whose approach emphasized scale and a sense of untamed, mystical geography, moving away from the traditional pastoral depictions of white mana sources.

Upon its release, the card was widely noted for its departure from standard high-fantasy tropes in favor of a more cinematic, geological focus. The art direction for Zendikar prioritized a sense of peril and discovery, leading to a highly cohesive visual identity that is still frequently cited by players and art critics within the hobby as a high-water mark for the game's landscape design. Its aesthetic influence has persisted, as subsequent returns to the plane have consistently sought to emulate the dramatic, expansive style established by this generation of cards.
