Where it came from
The Plains card, collector number 283 from the 2016 Shadows over Innistrad expansion, was designed to immerse players in the gothic horror setting of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. As the set marked a return to the plane of Innistrad, the art direction emphasized a world under siege by eldritch corruption and psychological dread, moving away from the more traditional high-fantasy pastoral landscapes usually associated with basic lands.
This particular illustration, captured by artist Christine Choi, leans into the desolate and melancholic atmosphere of the set. Through a muted color palette and stark lighting, the piece evokes the encroaching darkness of the story, serving as a backdrop for the narrative of a crumbling society facing existential threats. It was well-received for its ability to maintain thematic consistency with the set's unsettling tone while still functioning as a recognizable foundation for gameplay.
