Where it came from
The Plains card, numbered 334, was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Odyssey was the first set in its respective block and was designed to emphasize the graveyard as a playable resource, marking a shift in the game's mechanical focus toward recursion and attrition-based strategies. The set is noted for its evocative, atmospheric world-building centered on the continent of Otaria.
This specific illustration of the Plains was created by artist Rob Alexander, a longtime contributor to the game known for his lush, sweeping landscapes. In this piece, Alexander aimed to capture the stark, expansive beauty of the Otarian plains, utilizing his signature style of layered, painterly light to convey a sense of solitude and vastness. The card was widely appreciated by players for its classic aesthetic, which departed from the more stylized art directions found in preceding sets.
