Where it came from
The 2018a Grand Prix Promo Plains was released as part of a recurring series of promotional cards distributed to participants at Grand Prix tournaments sanctioned by Wizards of the Coast. These cards served as rewards for players attending these large-scale competitive events during the height of the tournament circuit. As a basic land, this specific iteration was designed to provide attendees with a distinct, collectible version of a foundational gameplay element, encouraging participation and fostering a sense of community among competitive players.
The artwork for this particular promo was crafted by artist Noah Bradley, a figure whose contributions to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic were highly regarded during this period. Bradley utilized his signature landscape-focused style to emphasize the sweeping, serene vistas associated with a Plains card, aiming to evoke a sense of vast openness. The piece was well received by players for its departure from standard set art, offering a more atmospheric and painterly aesthetic that has since become a sought-after staple for collectors of tournament-exclusive cards.
