Provenance

Where it came from

The 1999 Starter set was designed by Wizards of the Coast as an entry-level bridge for players new to Magic: The Gathering, replacing the earlier Portal introductory line. The set was conceived to simplify gameplay by excluding complex mechanics and streamlining deck construction, ensuring that the barrier to entry was low for those unfamiliar with the game's more intricate rules.

The landscape art for this Plains card belongs to a series of basic lands commissioned to provide a clean, approachable aesthetic for beginners. By emphasizing clear visual markers for each mana type, the design team aimed to help new players immediately identify their resource pools during a match, balancing functional clarity with the high-fantasy artistic standards expected of the game.
