Where it came from
The 2017 Gift Pack was released by Wizards of the Coast as a holiday-themed product designed to provide newer players with a curated selection of cards. This specific Plains, bearing collector number 1, is part of a set of five basic lands featuring distinctive, full-art-style illustrations by various artists. These lands were crafted to offer a more aesthetic, premium visual experience compared to the standard basic lands found in traditional booster packs, serving as an entry point for collectors interested in thematic card variants.
The design of this card reflects the mid-2010s shift toward emphasizing high-quality digital illustration in Magic: The Gathering to enhance the game's collectible appeal. While the card functions mechanically as a standard resource, the art was commissioned to evoke a specific sense of serenity and expansive landscape, aligning with the visual identity established in the broader Amonkhet and Kaladesh block era. Upon release, the set was received as a practical and accessible gift, particularly favored by those looking to upgrade the aesthetic quality of their decks without the volatility of the secondary market.
