Provenance

Where it came from

The Plains card numbered 230 from the 2010 Magic: The Gathering set Scars of Mirrodin depicts the landscape of the artificial plane of Mirrodin as it undergoes a process of corruption known as Phyrexianization. The set was designed to revisit the metallic world originally introduced in the 2003 Mirrodin block, but this time focusing on the creeping metallic oil of the Phyrexians that threatens to alter the ecosystem. It serves as a visual document of the transition from a pristine, man-made world to one being forcibly integrated into a hive-mind machine culture.

The artwork for this specific card was created by artist Jung Park. Tasked with illustrating the iconic white mana landscape, Park leaned into the set's central theme by showcasing the stark, sculptural nature of Mirrodin's architecture now marred by jagged, oily protrusions. The design aimed to balance the familiar aesthetic of an open field with the unsettling, rigid geometry of the encroaching Phyrexian influence, reflecting the internal struggle between the plane's original creators and their new, parasitic masters.
