Where it came from
The Plains card numbered 254a from the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Battle for Zendikar was created as part of a series of full-art basic lands. This set marked a return to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile landscapes and adventurous tone. The visual design choice to extend the artwork to the edges of the card was intended to immerse players in the sprawling, majestic geography of the setting, moving away from the traditional text-box framing.
The illustration for this specific card was crafted by Noah Bradley, a prominent digital artist known for his atmospheric landscape work. His goal was to capture the essence of Zendikar’s unique, gravity-defying topography through ethereal light and sweeping scale. Upon release, these full-art basic lands were highly sought after by collectors and players alike, becoming a hallmark of the set’s aesthetic legacy and a favorite for custom deck building.
