Where it came from
The Forest card, collector number 1943, was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line from Wizards of the Coast that offers curated, thematic, and often artist-driven collections of Magic: The Gathering cards. This specific card was featured in the 'Artist Series: Johannes Voss' drop, released in early 2021. The set was created to spotlight the distinctive aesthetic of Johannes Voss, an illustrator known for his soft, emotive, and ethereal art style within the fantasy genre.
Designed to push the boundaries of traditional card aesthetics, the illustration for this Forest eschews the typical landscape orientation for a more intimate, dreamlike depiction of nature. Voss focused on a tranquil, magical atmosphere that aligns with the game's broader push toward stylized, premium-grade collectible cards. The drop was well-received by collectors who prioritize artistic expression and unique visual treatments over the standard game art found in booster packs.
