Provenance

Where it came from

The Forest card, numbered 579, was released as part of the 'Secret Lair' series by Wizards of the Coast. This initiative, launched in 2019, offers limited-edition, curated collections of Magic: The Gathering cards featuring stylized, artist-driven illustrations that depart from the traditional aesthetic of standard set releases. The line was designed to provide collectors with unique, premium versions of iconic cards that emphasize thematic cohesion and artistic expression.

This specific Forest features artwork by the illustrator known as Jen Bartel, who utilized a distinct, vibrant art nouveau-inspired style. Bartel, celebrated for her work in the comic book industry, intended to capture the ethereal and organic essence of a forest while maintaining the high-contrast, polished aesthetic characteristic of her portfolio. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by the player base for its departure from standard landscape art and its commitment to a specific, cohesive visual identity.
