Where it came from
The Forest card, designated as collector number 2513, was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop series, a specialized line of Magic: The Gathering products featuring curated, thematic artwork. These drops were introduced by Wizards of the Coast to offer collectors unique, stylized versions of cards that deviate from the standard aesthetic of the game's core sets, focusing on limited-window availability to create a distinct sense of exclusivity.
This specific Forest features artwork by the illustrator known as Jen Bartel. Her design approach emphasizes vibrant, stylized portraiture and saturated color palettes, moving away from the traditional, grounded landscape illustrations typically associated with basic lands in the game. Upon its release, the card was widely noted for its departure from the conventional artistic direction of Magic, appealing specifically to collectors who value a modern, expressive aesthetic over traditional fantasy realism.
