Forest

The Forest card from the 30th Anniversary Edition was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to commemorate three decades of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This collection was designed as a non-tournament-legal celebration of the game's history, specifically recreating the aesthetic and card list of the original 1993 Limited Edition Alpha set. By utilizing the classic card frame and the nostalgic, foundational artwork that defined the early days of the game, the set served as a tribute to the players and the evolution of the hobby since its inception in Richard Garfield's design office.

The artistic direction for this particular Forest card adheres to the original 1993 illustration by Jesper Myrfors, the game’s first art director. Myrfors sought to establish a visual language for the game that balanced high fantasy with a somewhat muted, grounded naturalism. While the 30th Anniversary Edition cards feature a distinct back design to differentiate them from original vintage printings, the front imagery preserves the specific textural quality and composition that established the identity of basic lands for millions of players over the last thirty years.
