Plains

The 1997 World Championship Decks were a unique product line released by Wizards of the Coast to allow players to replicate the strategies used by top competitors during the 1997 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. Unlike standard booster packs, these boxed sets contained exact replicas of the 60-card decks played by finalists, featuring gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures to distinguish them from tournament-legal cards. This specific Plains card was included as a functional land component within these pre-constructed decks, serving as a snapshot of the competitive landscape at the time.

The design of this card adheres to the established visual language of the Tempest expansion, which served as the mechanical foundation for much of the 1997 tournament season. The artwork maintains the traditional, serene aesthetic associated with basic lands in the game, designed to provide a cohesive visual experience while highlighting the resource management central to the gameplay. These decks were well-received by the community as educational tools, offering a rare look into the deck-building philosophies of professional players like Paul McCabe and Jakub Slemr.
