Island

The 1997 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product, allowing players to own exact replicas of the decks used by the top eight competitors at the 1997 Magic: The Gathering World Championships in Seattle. This specific Island is a basic land card from that collection, featuring a distinct gold-bordered back that differentiates it from standard tournament-legal cards. These decks served as both a celebration of the competitive meta at the time and a functional tool for casual play, providing fans with a window into the strategies that dominated the professional scene in the late nineties.

The design of this card follows the aesthetic established in the Mirage expansion, showcasing the classic landscape illustration by artist Richard Kane Ferguson. Known for his painterly, evocative style, Ferguson’s work on this Island captures a serene, mystical interpretation of the terrain that became a hallmark of the set. Upon its initial release, the World Championship Decks were well-received for their accessibility and historical significance, offering players a tangible piece of competitive history while highlighting the iconic visual language that defined the game's early developmental era.
