Provenance

Where it came from

The Forest card from the 2003 Mirrodin expansion represents a pivotal shift in the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. As the first set to take place on the titular metallic plane of Mirrodin, the art direction demanded a departure from traditional organic landscapes. The card depicts a world where nature has adapted to a harsh, artificial environment, emphasizing the unique 'artifact' theme of the block where even the flora appears forged from metal and silica.

This particular illustration was created by artist Rob Alexander, a longtime contributor to the game known for his atmospheric landscapes. Alexander was tasked with visualizing a forest that felt alien yet recognizable as a source of green mana, resulting in a design that blends sprawling, razor-like structures with the quintessential verdant palette of the Forest card type. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its role in grounding the high-concept world-building of Mirrodin through its distinct, cohesive aesthetic.
