Where it came from
This Forest card is part of the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Amonkhet, which draws thematic inspiration from Ancient Egyptian mythology. The set depicts a world ruled by the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas, where the landscape reflects a brutal, desert-themed civilization. As a basic land, this card was designed to function as a fundamental resource for players, with its aesthetic heavily leaning into the set's iconic 'trial' and 'monument' motifs to maintain visual consistency across the deck's terrain.
The art for this specific Forest was created by the illustrator Jonas De Ro. His vision for the Amonkhet landscape focuses on the contrast between the harsh, sun-drenched environment and the imposing, architectural ruins that define the plane. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its evocative atmosphere, which successfully bridged the gap between traditional fantasy forest imagery and the unique, arid aesthetic of the Amonkhet expansion.
