Where it came from
The Forest card, numbered 247, was released in the 2010 Magic: The Gathering expansion Scars of Mirrodin. This set marked a return to the metal-dominated plane of Mirrodin, where the landscape was being corrupted by the insidious Phyrexian infection. The design shift was intended to contrast the organic, lush growth of the natural world against the encroaching metallic artifice that defined the set's central conflict.
The artwork for this specific iteration was illustrated by the veteran Magic artist John Avon. Known for his expansive and atmospheric landscape work, Avon sought to capture a sense of desolation and transformation, using a color palette that emphasizes the contrast between the dying foliage and the glowing, unnatural blight seeping into the environment. The piece was well-received by the player base for its evocative depiction of a world undergoing a brutal, artificial metamorphosis.
