Where it came from
The Forest card, designated as number 348, was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the first set in the Rath Cycle, Tempest introduced a darker, more cinematic narrative to the game, focusing on a storyline involving the plane of Rath and the Phyrexians. Within this set, the basic lands were produced in a distinct art style that departed from earlier, more impressionistic versions of the game's terrain.
The artwork for this specific Forest was created by Rob Alexander, a prominent illustrator known for his contributions to the game during the late 1990s. Alexander's design for the Tempest basic lands was intended to evoke a lush, overgrown, and slightly foreboding wilderness that aligned with the expansion's gothic and volatile atmosphere. The cards were well-received by players at the time for their cohesive aesthetic and deep, moody color palette, which helped establish a consistent visual identity for the set's diverse biomes.
