Where it came from
The Forest card, numbered 246a, was released as part of the 2009 Zendikar set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant thematic shift for the game, focusing on a dangerous, adventure-filled plane of existence where the landscape itself was dynamic and treacherous. The introduction of full-art lands was a deliberate design choice meant to emphasize the sheer scale and visual impact of the Zendikar environment, allowing the artwork to occupy the entirety of the card frame.
The illustration for this specific card was created by Vincent Proce, a long-time contributor to the game. Proce aimed to capture the alien and expansive nature of Zendikar’s untamed wilderness, utilizing dramatic perspective and vibrant colors to distinguish the set from previous iterations. Upon release, the full-art lands were exceptionally well-received by the player base, becoming iconic staples of the game's aesthetic and maintaining lasting popularity among collectors due to their immersive and polished design.
