Where it came from
The Island card from the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar, numbered 234a, is part of a landmark cycle of full-art basic lands. Released during a period when the game was shifting toward more immersive world-building, these cards were designed to highlight the unique, adventure-focused landscape of the Zendikar plane. The set's art direction prioritized a 'lands matter' theme, necessitating a visual style that captured the vast, untamed nature of the environment.
The illustration for this specific Island was created by Veronique Meignaud. Her approach for the Zendikar cycle involved vibrant, ethereal color palettes and sweeping landscapes that felt both alien and majestic. Upon release, these full-art lands were met with widespread acclaim from the player base, largely because they abandoned traditional borders to provide a canvas for the artwork, eventually becoming a highly sought-after aesthetic standard for future sets.
