Where it came from
The Forest card, marked as collector number 249a, was released in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar. This set was designed around an adventure-themed aesthetic, focusing on exploration, discovery, and the hazards of a wild, untamed world. The inclusion of full-art basic lands was a hallmark of the set, intended to showcase the sweeping, epic landscapes of the plane of Zendikar and distinguish the set's visual identity from preceding releases.
The artwork for this specific Forest was created by the artist Vinod Rams, who utilized a lush, vibrant color palette to evoke the theme of an overgrown, mana-rich environment. Full-art lands from Zendikar were received with significant enthusiasm by the player community, largely due to their minimalist card frame, which allowed the illustration to dominate the space. This design choice became highly influential, establishing a popular precedent for future collectible basic lands in the game.
