Provenance

Where it came from

This Forest card, numbered 246 in the Zendikar expansion released in 2009, represents a fundamental shift in the aesthetic of Magic: The Gathering. Zendikar was designed as an adventure-themed world, emphasizing exploration and the perilous, shifting nature of the landscape, which led Wizards of the Coast to commission full-art basic lands that focused on wide, sweeping vistas rather than the traditional border-heavy framing.

The artwork for this particular land was created by Veronique Meunier, whose contribution was part of a broader artistic initiative to emphasize the 'living' nature of the plane. The decision to feature full-art basic lands was highly popular among players, as it allowed for a cleaner, more immersive visual experience, and these cards have since become a recurring highlight of sets centered on the Zendikar plane due to their high demand and iconic status among collectors.
