Forest

The Forest card, numbered 349 in the Invasion expansion for Magic: The Gathering, was released in October 2000. As part of the set's cycle of basic lands, it was designed to support the expansion's focus on multicolored decks and the 'domain' mechanic, which rewarded players for controlling multiple basic land types. The set was developed by Wizards of the Coast during a period when the game was shifting toward more complex, synergy-driven mechanics, following the aftermath of the controversial Masques block.

The artwork for this specific card was commissioned to Rob Alexander, a staple landscape artist for the game during this era. His contribution to the Invasion set was intended to reflect the lush, expansive environments of the plane of Dominaria, which was the central focus of the narrative at the time. Alexander's style for these lands was characterized by a balance of painterly texture and clarity, ensuring the cards remained visually distinct and functional on the tabletop, a design philosophy that earned him significant acclaim within the community.
