Forest

The Forest card from the Mirage expansion was released by Wizards of the Coast in October 1996. Mirage was the first set in what would become known as the Mirage block, a pivotal release that moved the game toward a more cohesive narrative and thematic design. This particular Forest card was illustrated by artist Susan Van Camp, who contributed to several early Magic sets and helped define the lush, painterly aesthetic that characterized the mid-nineties era of the game.

The design of the Mirage basic lands was intended to evoke a more vibrant and diverse environmental feel compared to the starker illustrations found in earlier sets. By commissioning artists like Van Camp to focus on specific biomes, the creative team aimed to ground the player in the exotic, Africa-inspired setting of the plane of Jamuraa. While basic lands are ubiquitous in Magic, these illustrations remain well-regarded by long-time players for their nostalgic composition and the unique texture Van Camp brought to the landscape.
