Where it came from
The European Land Program, often referred to by collectors as the 'Guru Lands,' was a promotional set of Magic: The Gathering basic lands released in 1996. These cards were distributed exclusively through European hobby shops and tournament organizers to support the game's expansion into new markets, making them some of the most sought-after basic land variants of the mid-1990s era.
The art for the Forest (card number 11) was commissioned from Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early illustrators. Rush utilized a distinct, painterly style that departed from the more standardized aesthetics of the core sets, focusing on lush, evocative landscapes that captured a sense of place. The set was received with immediate enthusiasm by the community, setting a precedent for high-quality, regional promotional cards that remains a cornerstone of Magic: The Gathering collectibility today.
