Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast to allow players to own high-level replicas of the decks used by finalists at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship. Each deck contained a sideboard and a sixty-card main deck, all featuring gold-bordered backs and signatures of the players on the cards to distinguish them from tournament-legal cards. This specific Forest, identified as collector number jt349a, hails from the deck piloted by Jan Tomcani, who competed in the tournament held in Toronto that year.
The artwork for this base set Forest was originally created by Rob Alexander, a prolific illustrator for the game during its early years. Alexander’s landscapes are celebrated for their atmospheric depth and painterly quality, which helped establish the visual language of the game's various biomes. By the time this deck was issued, his depiction of the Forest had become an iconic piece of the game's identity, chosen for this deck to showcase the classic aesthetic that defined the competitive environment of the early 2000s.
