Where it came from
The 1996 Arena League Forest card, numbered 5, was released as part of a promotional set designed to celebrate the organized play structure of Magic: The Gathering. During this era, Wizards of the Coast utilized these special card releases to bolster community engagement and incentivize participation in local tournament scenes. The set is notable for its distinct, minimalist art style, which departed from the more illustrative, high-fantasy aesthetic common in base sets of the time.
The design of the Arena League cards was focused on clarity and utility for players within a competitive tournament environment. While many of the land cards from this period were commissioned to highlight specific thematic elements of the game's biomes, this particular Forest was crafted to provide a clean, standardized look. It remains a sought-after piece for collectors of promotional Magic ephemera due to its limited distribution at official league events in the mid-1990s.
