Where it came from
The Island card from the Commander Masters set, designated as collector number 790, was released in 2023 as part of a premium set specifically curated to support the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to be a reprint-heavy experience, offering players access to powerful and iconic cards that had previously seen limited availability or high market prices. The inclusion of basic lands with specialized art styles, such as this, serves to provide aesthetic variety for players deck-building within the popular multiplayer format.
The visual direction for the lands in Commander Masters focuses on high-fantasy landscapes that evoke the vast, ethereal nature of the game's multiverse. By utilizing distinct artistic treatments, the design team aimed to elevate the visual identity of basic lands, turning functional gameplay staples into collectable art pieces. The reception among the player base centered on the utility of these cards as a way to personalize decks, balancing the functional requirements of the game with a desire for distinct, visually striking aesthetics that distinguish Commander play from other formats.
