Where it came from
The M19 Standard Showdown Island was released in 2018 as part of the Core Set 2019 promotional cycle. These cards were distributed to participants of Standard Showdown events, a series of weekly organized play tournaments held at local game stores designed to encourage competitive play in the Standard format. This specific land features the serene, minimalist aesthetic typical of the set's cycle, focusing on the core essence of the mana source.
The art for this land was created by Adam Paquette, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering who is well-regarded for his sweeping, atmospheric landscapes. In this design, Paquette leaned into the ethereal quality of the environment, utilizing soft lighting and expansive horizons to evoke a sense of calm. The piece was received positively by players for its ability to stand out from standard-issue set lands while maintaining the thematic consistency of the Core Set.
