Where it came from
The Island card, numbered 2117, was released as part of the 'Secret Lair' drop series, a direct-to-consumer initiative by Wizards of the Coast that features curated, artistic reprints of Magic: The Gathering cards. This specific card debuted in the 'Secret Lair x Street Fighter' drop, which sought to bridge the gap between the long-standing trading card game and the iconic fighting game franchise. Released in 2022, the drop was designed to celebrate the legacy of Street Fighter through the lens of Magic's tactical gameplay, offering fans limited-edition collectibles.
The artwork for this particular Island was created by a guest illustrator tasked with capturing the thematic essence of the crossover. The design aesthetic balances the traditional iconography of a basic land card with the high-energy, vibrant visuals associated with the Street Fighter aesthetic. Upon release, the set was received as a novel collaboration, appealing to both TCG enthusiasts interested in unique card variants and gamers drawn to the nostalgic cross-promotion.
