Where it came from
The Island card from the War of the Spark expansion, numbered 255, was released in May 2019 as part of the core set's basic land cycle. This set was unique in Magic: The Gathering history for its narrative-heavy focus, centering on the climax of the multi-year Bolas Arc storyline. The basic lands were specifically commissioned to reflect the architectural and atmospheric shift of the plane of Ravnica under the threat of Nicol Bolas's invasion, moving away from the standard cityscapes to show the chaotic, encroaching presence of the conflict.
The artwork for this particular Island was created by Titus Lunter. Lunter's vision for the War of the Spark lands emphasized the immense scale of the cityscape, utilizing dramatic lighting and perspective to illustrate how the sprawling metropolis of Ravnica appeared as the sky turned ominous. The piece was well-received by players for its atmospheric departure from typical blue-toned water vistas, instead opting for a moody, grounded aesthetic that successfully tied the land card to the set's urgent, cinematic tone.
