Where it came from
This Island card was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line of Magic: The Gathering products introduced by Wizards of the Coast to offer curated, artist-driven reprints with unique, high-concept aesthetics. This specific land, numbered 1648, reflects the brand's strategy of commissioning distinct thematic art to appeal to collectors who favor premium visuals over standard expansion-set card stock.
The artwork for this particular Island was illustrated by the artist Ejiwa 'Edge' Ebenebe. Her design reflects a deliberate departure from the traditional cartographic style of basic lands, favoring a more evocative, painterly approach to the concept of a natural water source. The piece was well-received by the player base for its atmospheric composition and its integration into the broader artistic direction of the 'Secret Lair' initiative, which often prioritizes stylistic cohesion within individual drops.
