Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the Secrets of Strixhaven subset, numbered 275, was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were introduced as Mystical Archive inserts, featuring a unique, ornate frame design that reflects the scholarly and magical aesthetic of the Strixhaven University setting. The series was designed to celebrate the history of powerful spells throughout the game's lifespan, utilizing a distinct visual language that distinguishes these cards from standard set releases.

The illustration for this specific land card emphasizes the academic grandeur of the plane of Strixhaven. By incorporating ethereal, architectural elements and a focus on the plane's specialized environment, the design seeks to immerse players in the world of competitive arcane studies. Upon its release, the card and the broader Mystical Archive collection were well-received by players and collectors alike for their stylistic departure from the typical land art, providing a sophisticated visual touch to the set's high-fantasy themes.
