Where it came from
The Island card from The Brothers' War Commander set, numbered 31, was released in late 2022 as part of a series designed to support the Commander format. This specific iteration of the Island features art by Titus Lunter, who is well-regarded for his contributions to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic, particularly his ability to capture expansive, atmospheric landscapes. The artwork reflects the mechanical and war-torn thematic backdrop of the set, which revisits the ancient conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra.
The design of this card follows a tradition of basic lands within Commander preconstructed decks, which are crafted to provide players with functional, aesthetically cohesive resources for their gameplay. As a basic land, its inclusion serves as a foundational element of the set's manabase, emphasizing the set's identity through illustrative storytelling. It was received as a standard, reliable component of the set, appreciated for Lunter’s signature style that bridges the gap between classic fantasy and the industrial motifs central to The Brothers' War narrative.
