Where it came from
The Island (Collector Number 889) is a basic land card released as part of the Secret Lair Drop series, specifically featured in the 'Special Guest: Yoji Shinkawa' drop. This set was launched in 2020 as a direct-to-consumer initiative by Wizards of the Coast, designed to showcase unique, artist-driven interpretations of iconic Magic: The Gathering cards that stand apart from traditional expansion sets.
The card features the distinct, high-contrast ink-wash aesthetic of Yoji Shinkawa, the legendary lead character designer for the Metal Gear Solid video game franchise. Shinkawa’s design intent was to imbue the classic, serene landscape of an island with his signature skeletal, minimalist brushwork, resulting in a stark, artistic departure from the typical vibrant illustrations found in standard Magic sets. The drop was received with significant enthusiasm by the community, bridging the gap between high-end digital illustration and traditional tabletop trading cards.
