Island

This version of the Island card was released as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering, which launched in 2022. The set was born from a collaborative partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark, industrial aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the trading card game format. It was designed to appeal to both tabletop wargamers and long-time Magic players by integrating iconic factions and imagery from the Warhammer universe into a functional, thematic deck structure.

The artwork for this specific card leans heavily into the signature Gothic architecture and hive-city landscape design inherent to the Warhammer 40,000 setting. Illustrators tasked with the set aimed to evoke a sense of planetary scale and oppressive density, moving away from the traditional high-fantasy landscapes of Magic and into the rusted, neon-lit, and fortified environments typical of the Imperium of Man. The reception was largely positive, with players noting how successfully the art direction captured the oppressive atmosphere of the source material while remaining recognizable within the context of a basic land card.
