Where it came from
The Island card from the Dominaria United set, bearing collector number 265, was released by Wizards of the Coast in September 2022. It belongs to a cycle of basic lands designed to celebrate the return to the plane of Dominaria, a setting central to the foundational lore of the Magic: The Gathering card game. These lands were crafted to evoke the classic fantasy aesthetic that defined the game during its early years in the 1990s, serving as a nostalgic touchstone for longtime players while maintaining the visual standards of contemporary digital illustration.
The artwork for this specific Island was created by Adam Paquette, a prolific illustrator known for his expansive, atmospheric landscapes within the game. In this piece, Paquette aimed to capture the tranquil yet monumental geography of a Dominarian coastal region, emphasizing depth and a soft, ethereal light. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its painterly quality and its successful integration of modern art techniques with the iconic, high-fantasy tone associated with the Dominaria setting.
