Where it came from
The Island card, numbered 1479, was released as part of the 'Secret Lair' series by Wizards of the Coast, a specialized line of limited-run, collectible cards for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This specific drop features artwork by the renowned Japanese illustrator Junji Ito, famous for his unsettling and masterful horror manga, and was made available to the public in early 2023 to offer players unique, artist-driven aesthetic variations for their decks.
The design of this card reflects Ito's signature surrealist and body-horror style, focusing on the distorted, uncanny landscapes that define his narrative work. By integrating such a distinct stylistic approach into the standard visual language of Magic: The Gathering, the collaboration was met with significant enthusiasm from both long-time players and fans of contemporary horror illustration, serving as a notable bridge between the gaming world and high-end graphic artistry.
