Where it came from
The Island card from the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021 as part of a landmark collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop franchise. This specific basic land, designated as collector number 266, was created to ground the card game in the iconic fantasy geography of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, blending classic Magic mechanics with the established lore and aesthetic sensibilities of the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse.
The art for this card, executed by the illustrator Titus Lunter, captures a serene, mountainous coastline intended to evoke the remote and magical vistas found throughout the Sword Coast. Lunter’s design philosophy for the set focused on capturing a sense of discovery and high fantasy adventure, aiming to make each basic land feel like a place a player might actually traverse during a tabletop campaign. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its atmospheric rendering and its successful integration of the D&D visual style into the Magic card frame.
