Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the Magic: The Gathering Eighth Edition set was released in 2003 as part of the game's shift to the modern card frame. This set was notable for being the first core set to feature this updated aesthetic, which included a cleaner font, a new border design, and a more prominent holographic security stamp to prevent counterfeiting.

The artwork for this specific Island was created by Rob Alexander, a prolific artist in the Magic: The Gathering landscape. His work on this piece captures the classic aesthetic of his landscape paintings, focusing on tranquil, atmospheric environments meant to evoke the core identity of the blue mana source. Upon its release, the card was widely distributed in starter decks and booster packs, serving as a staple foundational card for players building decks in the early 2000s.
