Where it came from
The Island card from the 2009 Planechase release serves as a fundamental land staple within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. Published by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to introduce a multi-player variant format where players travel between various planes of existence. The inclusion of basic lands in this release provided thematic consistency for players looking to construct decks that matched the visual aesthetic of the Planechase supplemental cards.
The artwork for this specific iteration features a serene, panoramic landscape that emphasizes the core identity of the blue mana color. The visual direction for the set was intended to evoke the mystery and shifting nature of the multiverse, moving away from the static, traditional designs found in standard expansion sets. It was received by the player base as a functional and evocative addition to the growing catalog of art-centric lands that defined the late 2000s era of the game.
