Provenance

Where it came from

Released in the fall of 2000, this Island card is part of the Invasion expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set depicted the climactic struggle of the plane of Dominaria against the invading Phyrexian forces, characterized by a return to multicolor themes and complex mechanics. This specific card represents the foundational resource of the game, designed to provide blue mana for players during the Invasion era.

The artwork for this specific card was rendered by artist Rob Alexander, a staple illustrator for the game during its formative years. Alexander was known for his atmospheric, landscape-focused style that helped establish the visual language of the game's various environments. His take on the Island for this set leaned into the dramatic, turbulent aesthetic of a war-torn Dominaria, emphasizing expansive vistas and calm waters that contrasted with the invasion-heavy themes of the rest of the expansion.
