Where it came from
Released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering, this card represents the Japanese-inspired plane of Kamigawa. The set was designed to explore a world heavily influenced by Shinto mythology and feudal Japanese folklore, marking a distinct thematic departure from the high-fantasy aesthetic that dominated previous sets. This specific Island, labeled number 291 in the set, serves as a basic land resource, essential for playing blue-aligned spells within the game's mechanics.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Heather Hudson, who was tasked with visualizing the serene, mist-covered environments characteristic of the Kamigawa plane. Her design approach prioritized a painterly, atmospheric quality, utilizing soft lighting and tranquil compositions to evoke the spiritual depth of the setting. The card was well-received by players for its cohesive integration into the set's broader artistic vision, contributing to the enduring reputation of Kamigawa's landscape illustrations.
