Provenance

Where it came from

The 2011 Commander product line marked a significant expansion for Wizards of the Coast, representing the first standalone release dedicated to the popular multiplayer format formerly known as EDH. This specific Island, bearing collector number 303, was included as a basic land within the five preconstructed decks released that spring. It serves as a representative example of the functional, accessible design philosophy that defined the set's introduction to the wider market.

The artwork for this card was created by Lars Grant-West, a veteran illustrator known for his contributions to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Grant-West’s approach emphasizes the naturalistic, immersive aesthetic typical of the game's landscapes, focusing on a serene and expansive coastal scene. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a consistent, high-quality staple that provided essential mana support for the blue-aligned preconstructed decks.
